ISO 42001 Readiness: Evidence and Certification

Make the controls work before the audit.

Understand the practical difference between AI governance, ISO/IEC 42001 readiness and independent certification. Plan scope, ownership and operating evidence.

The useful version

Make the controls work before the audit.

ISO/IEC 42001 is an AI management system standard. A readiness engagement helps an organisation understand its scope, responsibilities, controls and evidence. Certification is a separate assessment by a certification body. Paloren does not present itself as a certification body or promise that a consulting engagement guarantees a certificate.

AI management systems

Start with why the organisation needs alignment.

The decision should follow your customers, procurement requirements, risk and operating model. Do not commission a certification programme solely because another company lists a badge. Identify the requirement, who expects evidence and which part of the organisation is in scope.

Alignment can still be useful when certification is not the immediate objective. A defined management approach helps people understand responsibilities, keep records and review how AI is used. Whether formal certification is required is a question for your contracts, regulators and advisers, not a universal answer from a service page.

Describe the system you actually operate.

Inventory relevant AI uses, owners, suppliers, information and decisions. Distinguish a staff drafting tool from a connected workflow that changes customer records. Define the organisational boundaries and dependencies before calling the programme company-wide.

Use the current standard and competent advice for a clause-level assessment. This page does not reproduce the standard or pretend a short checklist is equivalent to it. A gap review should identify the evidence needed and the responsible owner, not just count documents.

AI management systems

Build evidence into everyday work.

Useful evidence can include approved-use decisions, access reviews, evaluation records, staff training, incidents, changes and management review. The exact requirements depend on the scoped management system and assessment.

A policy nobody applies is weak evidence of an operating control. Test a realistic exception: a new tool, restricted information, an output error or a proposed autonomous action. Can staff follow the rule, and can the owner show what happened? Record the finding and correction rather than hide the failed test.

Next: Keep advice and certification distinct.

Keep advice and certification distinct.

Consulting can help prepare the system and evidence. Independent certification assesses it. Confirm the certification body, its relevant accreditation, audit scope and commercial terms directly. Do not infer that a consultant may issue a recognised certificate because it mentions the standard.

Paloren can scope practical governance, training and implementation support. Specialist assurance and certification remain separate. We do not promise a pass, a fixed certification timeline or legal compliance from completing a workshop.

Next: Connect readiness to the business programme.

AI management systems

Connect readiness to the business programme.

Prioritise the gaps that affect real work and assign owners. Some require clearer policy, some require information or access changes, and some require staff practice. Maintain the system when vendors, workflows or responsibilities change.

The aim is not a parallel documentation exercise that nobody uses. The evidence should help your organisation make and explain AI decisions. Agree how readiness work connects to existing security, quality, privacy and governance processes with their owners.

From knowing to doing

Put the thinking to work.

  1. 01

    Define the requirement

Write down the task, owner and information boundary.

  2. 02

    Check the evidence

Review current primary sources and test representative work.

  3. 03

    Make the decision

Record assumptions, responsibilities and the next review.

What you take forward

A practical decision framework.

Explicit information and review boundaries.

Before we talk

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Does Paloren issue ISO 42001 certification?

No. Certification is a separate assessment by a certification body. Paloren can scope practical readiness, governance and training support.

Is certification mandatory for every business?

Do not assume so. Applicable obligations and procurement requirements depend on your organisation, contracts and jurisdiction. Obtain the relevant advice.

Is this a replacement for ISO 27001?

No. Discuss how the relevant management systems relate with their owners and assess the scope using the current standards.
